Frequently Asked Questions

about learning to dance!

What is a private lesson?

A private lesson consists of a session with one student or a couple working with one instructor.  During these lessons, you'll learn the finer points of dancing with a partner. A couple may have one or two instructors, according to preference. Private lessons are by appointment only and may be scheduled from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday - Friday. For our serious students only, we are open on Saturday.

What is a group lesson?

A group lesson consists of several students learning from one instructor. Students work primarily on basic steps and technique, learning also to dance with different partners to hone their leading and following skills. Group classes correspond to the level of dancing you are currently working on.

What is a practice party?

Practice parties are held twice a month. These parties are closed to studio students only, prepare you for dancing socially in public and allow you to apply material learned in your lessons without the pressure of the public eye upon you. Our students are here to have fun, learn, and dance! At our parties, we dim the lights and serve refreshments. Students have the opportunity to dance with other students, as well as the instructors.

What is a guest party?

Once a month, we sponsor a champagne guest party. Similar to an Open House, a champagne guest party gives students the chance to introduce their friends to the world of ballroom dancing. Floor shows demonstrating the various levels of dance we teach are performed by both students and staff. Don't forget -- if your friends sign up for lessons after attending as your guest, you earn free lessons! Call the studio at 772-299-5772 for more information.

What do we teach?

Our goal is to prepare you to dance with confidence in any social situation. Our curriculum consists of basic dances that will allow you to dance anywhere, with anyone, on any occasion! The most common dances are Foxtrot, Waltz, Rumba, Cha-Cha, East Coast Swing (single and triple steps are usually taught), Salsa and Merengue. Later on, you'll learn Tango, Samba, Mambo, Quickstep, West Coast Swing, Bolero, Viennese Waltz, and Paso-Doble.

We teach classes in American and International Style.  We offer special training for those who are interested in entering competitions or furthering their studies in dance.

How should I dress for my lesson?

Wear something comfortable that won't inhibit movement. We suggest leather-soled shoes for maximum ease and ladies' shoes with straps in back so your feet won't slip or slide. If you continue dancing, special shoes for ballroom dancing are strongly recommended. These shoes are made to move freely while giving your foot the proper support they need for comfort and stability. Ask in the studio if you would like more information.

How difficult is it to learn to dance?

It's actually easy to learn. It will take time to learn the various dances and a repertoire of steps. However, the learning is easy and fun. A steady approach with periodic practice will produce visible results in a short period. Especially for beginning dancers, we recommend at least 2 hours of private instruction a week to see better results. However, this is up to each individual's preference and his/her schedule.

Do I need a partner?

We teach both singles and couples. If you come in as one of our single students, your instructor will be your partner for your private lessons, and our groups and practice sessions will provide plenty of opportunity to meet other students with the same interests and goals.
