Students Of The Month
April 2012
Berit Olstad

Student Since 2006

Asya Dimitrov recently announced that Berit Olstad is student of the month for April at Royal Ballroom Dance Studio, due to her long-term commitment to ballroom dancing as well as her success at competitions over the years.

Olstad’s love of ballroom dancing started in February 2006 when friends gave her a gift certificate for introductory lessons at Royal Ballroom Dance Studio in Vero Beach. After those three lessons, Berit was hooked and signed up for the Foundation Dance program, which gave her a good base in both Ballroom and Latin. The rest, as they say, is history.

“I was very surprised that I had any sense of rhythm when I began dancing six years ago,” said Olstad. “As a registered nurse, I am well aware of the long-term benefits of an active lifestyle. I was surprised by the level of physical exercise that I enjoy from ballroom dancing.”

Oleg Dimitrov, co-owner of Royal Ballroom Dance Studio, is Olstad's professional instructor as well as partner at the ballroom dance competitions she attends throughout Florida. She competed this past January at the Palm Beach Classic with other students from Royal Ballroom.

“I am grateful for this recognition (of student of the month," Olstad said. "Ballroom dancing has become an unexpected passion for me especially because of the great friends I have met during this journey.”

Olstad has been a nurse at Indian River Medical Center since 1986. She is originally from Norway and moved to Vero Beach in 1985 from Saudi Arabia.

“Many of our students start ballroom dancing as Berit did, with a gift certificate from friends or for a special occasion," said Asya Dimitrov. "We are so proud that she embraced the opportunity to try something new and now makes ballroom dancing a big part of her life.”

Bill & Pam Proctor

Students Since 2004

1.      What caused you to explore taking ballroom dance lessons at Royal Ballroom Dance Studio?

The first date Pam and I had was a dance date. We both grew up with the very danceable fifties music, from the Platters to Elvis and Jerry Lee. We both have learned to love all sorts of ballroom dancing, especially Latin and rock-'n-roll. But in recent years the Argentine tango has been the main draw for us - and has led us to spend many hours with Oleg and Asya at the Royal Ballroom. Fortunately for us, the Dimitrovs are internationally ranked Argentine tango performers - and they know how to teach their craft!

2. What has been the biggest surprise about ballroom dancing?

The variety of music required for a complete experience of the Argentine tango has been a major surprise. There are three types of music, with quite different rhythms that you need to know - the basic, sinuous tango; the fast-moving milonga; and the tango waltz, which may move at a Viennese waltz pace. On a recent trip to New York City, we made the mistake of dancing these variations for almost a solid hour without a break. We could hardly walk out of the "milonga" (or Argentine dance parlor - the same term is used for the tango dance variation and for the place where the dance is held)!

3. Why would you recommend ballroom dancing to a friend or neighbor?

It's great exercise. There's an aerobic component if you keep moving with more athletic dances like the swing. But we've found something extra with the Argentine tango - the need to twist and turn and stretch muscles and ligaments that can grow stiff with disuse. Also, there's a meditative quality to many types of tango music - a feature that helps us get rid of the stresses of a hard day of work.

4. How would you describe your experience at Royal Ballroom Dance Studio?

We would highly recommend the experience for anyone who wants to learn any kind of ballroom dancing - from two of the greatest ballroom instructors not just in Vero Beach but also in Florida and the nation at large.
